I know it doesn’t seem like a Japanese recipe, but I’d never heard of “takoraisu,” or taco rice until I went to Japan. According to Wikipedia, it’s a dish that originated in Okinawa.
It’s a really simple concept: rice topped with taco ingredients. After sauteing the ground beef (or chicken) and cooking the rice, all you have to do is assemble it, which makes it a quick dinner on a night when you don’t feel like doing too much cooking.
I think any taco ingredients would be fine. My husband found some nice salsa at the store that we wanted to make the main flavor of the dish so we just kept ours simple with shredded lettuce, the meat, and at the last minute added a sprinkle of cheese.
I think it’s usually served with sour cream as well, but if you use a tasty salsa, it’s just as good without it. ♡
